What’s the best way to forecast changes in weather conditions? How can you measure how fast the wind is blowing?
Buy a handheld anemometer to measure wind speed, velocity, and wind pressure in a given area. Let’s take a closer look at how this instrument works.
The Working Principles of an Anemometer
The anemometer works on the standard principle of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. This quality measuring equipment measures wind speed or velocity and direction by evaluating contained or unconfined airflow.
Anemometers allow you to monitor weather patterns and predict weather conditions. They also help measure wind pressure.
Purpose of High-Speed Anemometers
Anemometers come in different sizes and shapes, providing specific measurements of various parameters. Since it utilizes low power, it serves many purposes, such as the following:
- Measuring airflow in air conditioners and ventilation units
- Measuring gas flow in turbulent atmospheric conditions
- Measuring wind velocity and direction in airspace travel
- Measuring wind pressure and direction in weather stations
Different Types of Anemometers
There are different kinds of anemometers that allow physicists and meteorologists to measure velocity and wind pressure, such as the following:
Cup Type Anemometer
This anemometer features 3 to 4 cylindrical cups that are attached to the horizontal arms with a vertical rod that rotates around the axis centrally. The system includes a shaft placed inside the axis to spin the cups.
When wind speed increases, the cups spin faster, and the shaft rotates quickly. To calculate wind speed, you must calculate the total number of rotations calibrated on an analog or digital wind meter.
Hot Wire Type Anemometer
Also referred to as a constant current or thermal flow type anemometer, this instrument functions based on the rate of cooling the hot wire. It also measures both wind pressure and wind speed. In this device, a thin hot wire undergoes electrical heating.
Once it comes in contact with the wind, it cools down. The amount of power needed to heat the wire helps calculate wind speed. When the wind speed is high, you’ll need more input power to maintain the wire at a constant temperature.
Tube Type Anemometer
This type of anemometer determines wind speed through air pressure. It features a glass tube, closed from one end, which allows you to experiment with the air pressure. Compare the air pressure inside the glass tube and the reading outside. Using these values, you can easily calculate wind speed and wind pressure.
Other types of anemometers include the following:
- Vane Anemometer
- Laser Doppler Anemometer
- Ultrasonic Anemometer
- Plate Anemometer
- Pilot Tube Static Anemometer
