Without proper protection, electrical equipment can sustain severe damage from a switching event or a lightning strike. If either causes a major outage, a company’s operations will cease. To protect distribution and transmission equipment, a surge arrestor is a perfect solution.
While a surge arrestor doesn’t protect a conductor from direct lightning strikes, it does act as a barrier against the electrical transients they produce when close to a conductor. That means the surge arrestor protects against the induced transient characteristics of a strike as opposed to a strike’s electrification.
